Intel selling its division that makes processors for handheld devices to Marvell

Microprocessor market giants Intel has revealed that they are selling their division that makes processors for handheld devices to Marvell Technology Group.

The deal is worth around USD 600 million and Marvell as a result gets control of the units that makes processors based on Intel’s XScale technology.

Interestingly, this gives them the ability to make chips powering the Blackberry and Treo handheld devices. This division employs 1,400 people and Marvell plans to retain most of them.

Intel is facing serious competition from smaller rivals AMD in the PC market and they are working hard on getting their groove back. The sale of this unit would help them concentrate on their primary market.
