Intel Corp. launches Intel Xeon 5100 processor range
World’s largest microprocessor market Intel has launched its latest microprocessor for server computers. The new processor is named Intel Xeon 5100 and it is aimed at the growing popularity of the AMD Opteron processors for servers.
Intel claims that this new processor more than doubles the performance of its previous top-of-the-line server chips. In addition, it consumes 40 percent less power. Power consumption by processors has become a talking point for tech companies, which are complaining about high power bills and heat generation from their servers.
Intel’s Xeon 5100 is also the first processor from the company to be developed using a new blueprint developed to create processors, which have low energy requirements. This processor comes with two cores and comes loaded with new features designed to boost power efficiency and add new functions.
Intel has priced this processor range from $209 to $851 per piece depending upon on their features when bought in volume.
