Guba to sell Sony movies online

Online multimedia site Guba has confirmed that they have signed on a deal with movie studio Sony Pictures Home Entertainment. This deal would allow them to sell Sony movies on the internet.

This would make Guba the first and currently the only video-sharing community to distribute Sony Pictures movies online.

Benjamin Feingold, SPHE president of worldwide home entertainment, digital distribution and acquisitions spoke on this deal: “If you look at cable, you have services that are basic-tier products and premium-tier products next to each other. We wanted to see how the chemistry would play out between online user-generated content and traditional studio and indie movie content for ownership and rental. User-generated content is getting eyeballs, and we’re happy that Guba is cleaning up the availability of unauthorized content.”

The company plans to offer as many as 100 of their feature-length movies on the Guba Premium online video service. Some of the initial titles being planned for this service include some big names like “Spider-Man 2”, “Memoirs of a Geisha”, “Kung Fu Hustle”, “Hitch” and “The Bridge on the River Kwai”.

Sony is also planning to expand this range to around 500 movies within this year. Feingold added: “We are open for business on the Internet. This is consistent with our studio’s history of bringing the finest entertainment to people through new technologies and channels.”
