What does Honda Unicorn means for the Indian Market?
September 9th, 2004 Leave a comment Visited 367 times, 1 so far today
The entry of Honda with the Unicorn changes everything. Bajaj now has another Honda to take care of. Hero Honda can no longer rely on their old logic of relying on a range of 3-4 engines to feed their current crop of Bikes which have largely remained unchanged for almost years now. Same engine powering CD-100, CD-Dawn, Splendor and Passion! How can they live with it with Honda bringing in latest technology and engines!
Yamaha is not even in the hunt for the top considering they are still recovering from the debacle they suffered when they had to stop making RX-100! With Fazer doing well, it just might be a start to a three sided war. Errm… TVS is also here with its awesome Centra and Victor! And then there is the Bullet… Everyone is supposed to stop for a Bullet. I doubt Honda will…
Welcome people… The real war starts now! Indian Motorcycling Industry is getting hotter and hotter by every moment…

Hi
I am a frustrated customer of Honda Unicorn. I have problems with poor design of Honda Unicorn and the Quality of few Parts which is being used in Honda Unicorn. I got new Honda unicorn on 6th November. From the first day itself the Fuel Gauge is not working. I contacted the Honda Service (Silicon Motors), They told me to fill Minimum 5 liters of petrol. I did the same, still the Fuel gauge is not working. Again I contacted during the free service, service people said they will set it right. But unfortunately without replacing the fuel gauge did the service. But In the Job sheet was entered as FUEL GUAGE NOT WORKING.
One More Problem is with the TAIL LAMP and the side FIBER BODY. Which is poor designed. Since the back portion of Honda unicorn is not sturdy due to which the tail lamp vibrates, Because of the vibration the fiber body has broken within 6 months. This has not happened because of rough handling or accident. It is because of poor design. Again I contacted the Service they said they are going to charge 1000 Rs. (INR) for the replacement. I am very frustrated with the Quality Service by Honda.

Hi,
i bought a Honda Unicorn on march 9th. the bike has its share of
problems namely, the front fairing & rear mudguard & tail-lamp vibrates like anything…. The silencer is also a faulty one…
The service guys r saying that these are manufacturing defects…
Honda is giving a free replacement kit for the above mentioned defects… but the service guys r dragging their feet (in hyderabad)… worst service among the all bike dealers… Now i wish
that i should have bought Pulsar…(it is a proven product which is
successful for the past 4 years)..

Hi,
I have bought Unicorn one month back and it is a superb bike. i was reading the comments of one customer, but what i felt it is a case to case complaint cuz lot of my friends having unicorn and they also dont feel any problem. Also, what i heard is that even that vibration problem with body parts, honda is replacing the parts at free of cost and new vehicles are with the modified parts. But pulsar contain lot of complaints and lot of anonymous sound from the engine. I strogly prefer honda unicorn cuz its worth for money.Cheers

Hi … all this talk about the vibration in the Unicorn is exaggeration to its limit … I am a proud owner of a Unicorn.. i brought it in june this year …. infact this is my first bike and i learnt driving a 2 wheeler on this bike itself …. My experience with the Unicorn has been a fantastic one … and when i went for the 1st free service , they changed all the dampers and added some cowls or some thing like that to reduce the slight vibrations to a very low level … i have completed my second service and the bike runs fanastic as usual .. i did have some problems with the disc after the rains … a visit to the service centre , the guys opened up the brake assembly and cleaned it with pressurised air being blown into it and all the dust being removed … and lo behold !… its working fine as ever !!!(ant that was at no charge at all !! ) my bike had got submerged in the recent flash floods in mumbai … the next day , i pushed the electric starter , the bike fired up and threw out all the water … and ran all fine …. it was quite a while after the floods that i serviced my bike for the second time … no issues at all … so i would like to sum it all up saying that , the Unicorn is a fantastic product the u can buy right now and an absolute value for money …. n yes … it does leave the pulsar way behind specially in the mid range :D
An absolutely Satisfied Unicorn customer !!!!!

Hi, honda official website india is http://www.honda2wheelersindia.com . Honda Unicorn gives 62 kml. its a superb bike. I saw the bike yesterady and they have introduced ned uncorn with different sticker. also they have modified the vibration problem..the bike seems to be good
October 25th, 2005 at 2:49 pm
I daily travel between Malad and Santacruz on the western express highway. Its a common sight to come across Honda Unicorn vibrating its tail !!!! Besides that it doesn’t have alloy wheels, which actually could have boasted the fuel efficiency. And no engine kill switch…to Hell to Honda for not producing world class product.

Hi this is a advice to all the people who want to take a unicorn. I have bought this bike on march from a dealer in Bangalore. The bike is good when it is delivered from the company. After the service it drops in performance. Maintenance is very expensive. You have to change oil frequently every 800kms.The company service is absoultely useless. They dont know how to tune a carburettor. Frankly the bike becomes a trash after the service. Only good part is my fincance company,HDFC bank is a good finance company, avail their service if you want to take any bike.

January 9th, 2006 at 5:08 pm
PULSOR&UNICORN&CBZ …….honda has come up with new technology ever in indian roads the “MONO SHOCK” it gives excelent drive comfort and better balancing of the vehicle, the unicorn clearly lacks the looks compared to pulsar but is far better than CBZ,the other thing is pulsar gives extra sound effects from the engine within 6 to 8 months, but as we all know this is the first bike from Honda and they dont compromise in quality. so the better judgement is unicorn..
January 27th, 2006 at 9:03 am
hi
I have bought Honda Unicorn in 14th Nov.I had my first servce done at 1200 KMs.The bike had some vibrations in the beginning but now not yet done the second service but the vibration is gone. The bike is smooth and giving me 50-55 km/l.
I will recommend the Honda Unicorn as a better option compared to all the others that you have listed. The main reason for choosing this new Honda bike is its sturdy build quality, adequate power and, more important, revolutionary mono-suspension at the rear. Much more than taking into consideration the peak power, in your specific case, the peak torque rating, the build of the bike, strength of the suspension and the potential driving dynamics of the bike are more important characteristics that you should be looking at.
The Unicorn will easily be rated as the most stable bike amongst its peers in the 150cc class. The advantage comes from its mono-suspension, which is located just below the rider’s seat position and at the junction of the bike’s diamond frame and its rectangular swing arms’ axis.
Instead of conventional twin shock absorbers in the rear, the Unicorn incorporates this single, high performance shock absorber mounted on a much tougher diamond frame. This suspension and frame combo offers superior riding comfort and excellent stability, an important trait that could offer riders of above average build a safer and better riding experience.
The Unicorn’s mono suspension design ensures centralisation of mass. By positioning the suspension close to the centre of gravity of the machine, turning characteristics, stability during braking and the overall riding performance is substantially enhanced. The Unicorn is also within your budget and it is adequately powered with a peak power rating of 13.3 bhp and a peak torque of 12.8 Nm at 5,500 rpm.
The comparison between the Bajaj Pulsar and the Honda Unicorn will have to revolve around two features â?? design and ride quality. The Pulsar DTS-i has a clear edge over the Unicorn in the design department. With its chunky, aggressive profile, the Pulsar is the better-looking bike and has a superior road presence compared to the relatively sedate and conventionally styled Unicorn.
However, the Unicorn scores higher points in parameters such as quality of gearbox, ride comfort, handling and long-term reliability. The advanced mono-suspension and lightweight diamond frame gives the bike excellent stability and rigid handling.
The Unicorn has a few other finer points in its favour, including the fact that it offers a better riding posture and that it has a more balanced, well-weighted handle bar that reduces the load on the rider compared to the other bike.
Honda has been in India for years now through its joint venture with the Hero Group. So, this is not exactly Honda’s first bike in the Indian market and it was already aware of all the needs of Indian bikers even before the Unicorn was put into the market. Most new bikes tend to have a few minor bugs in their performance or finish even though they have been thoroughly tested before being launched.
There are no significant ones that have been reported in the Unicorn and Honda has already introduced a new version with an electric self-start, something that was sorely missing in the first lot of vehicles. And yes, we think that the waiting period of about two to three months is worth it.

I am planning to buy a unicornâ?¦i want its details along with its advantages and disadvantages and the approximate mileage.
Can i compare Bajaj Discover againt Unicorn?
January 29th, 2006 at 8:31 pm
@ Ajay….I am using Honda Unicorn for the past 3 months.I had my two services done. The average milage i get is 51 KM/L.I have touched the max speed of 106 KM/L that too not on full throttle.I didnt get any problem other than a little vibration due to excessive disk brake usage n my fork had a problem.Other than this its really a no problem bike.
Plz one cannaot compare Bajaj Discover DTS-i with Honda Unicorn.I have already posted the advantages above so you can have a look.Honda Unicorn is the only bike in indian market at 150cc class that has the best refined Engine and the best gearbox. These are the only two issues one has to look out when buying a bike. The bikes like Bajaj Pulsar DTSi really lacks in engine refinment and gearbox.

i want to buy a bike can u send me the details of unicorn totally including mileage, cost on road and everything.
February 2nd, 2006 at 11:21 am
The most impressive part of Honda Unicorn is it’s Mono Suspension.
It is some thing that is very new to Indian Motorcycle Industry.
If every one going behind the same stereotype Pulsar then what about the revenue and prsence of other competitors in the Biking Industry.
The option explicit at the moment is Honda Unicon – Altered with the vibration problems, Fuel Gauge, TAIL LAMP and the side FIBER BODY which is poor designed.
Apart from this it is a classic.
An absolutely Satisfied Unicorn customer.

For the kind attention of
Head of R&D Division,
Honda Unicorn
Dear Sir,
I am an Aeronautical Engineer, used Royal Enfield (Bullet) for a long time. My brother owns a Pulsar. I bought a Unicorn on its introduction at Cochin and am using it for more than a Year, the 6th Servicing completed just recently.
Having regularly used the above three variants of bikes, my opinion as far as the Solo riding comfort is concerned – Unicorn is just unmatchable. But with Pillion, it is hopeless – for the Rear Wheel hits the frame/mudguard – just irritating; often ends-up with my wife’s curses. This is a unique problem of Unicorn (Please visualize a ride with pillion in our typical Indian roads with lot many humps and bumps – you would realise what I mean!!) — Could be resolved by increasing the mono spring tension to adequate levels.
As far as the mileage is concerned, during solo riding, though I could never contain myself within the “Speed vs Mileage†proportions (no unicorn rider can maintain I am sure), the mileage achieved is quite realistic – above 60 in average.
The Quality of the Spare parts needs to be maintained to HONDA level of expectations – for few parts of my bike got corroded very badly. They are replaced Free of Cost – I am glad; but replacement is not a permanent solution – Implementation of effective quality control is the only remedy. Please see below the problems and the possible solution.
a) Front/Rear Number Plates – Presently they are made of iron plate – To be replaced with AL plates.
b) Saree Guard – The existing Chrome Plated Saree Guard may be replaced with a Guard made of Steel.
c) The Exhaust (Bend) Pipe connecting the Cylinder to Silencer may also be replaced with a steel pipe for the corrosion problem can be resolved permanently with good appearance.
Trust, the above would be taken care-of.
Warm Regards
S. Anantha Kodi

HI this is my second post………..ITs been two months ive bought my unicorn …………..im having a very bad milage abt 35-37 in bangalore.ive finished my first service still the milege is the same …the service guys say unicorn easily gives a milege of 55 in bangalore but sadly im only getting a pathetic 35……ive talked to some guys (unicorn owners) and they also said they are having the same milege 35-38 not above than 40….is it a common problem .if it is, it is soo pathetic with honda … i would ve gone for pulsar 180 if ive known this milage issue before..and let this comment be an eyeopener for others..But in the last let me tell you unicorns driving comfort is unmatchable and the gear shift is soo smooth and im sure no other two wheeler in Indian road can give u this comfort………..but still milage problem stinks yaaar. real bad and that too 37 no way………

Really its my dream bike.Supension,disk-breake,power,soundless is excllent.Really it makes us feel like wingrider.
U should provide starter for intinal custumer with afforwadable price.Front cavle should be strengthed.Well i ride bike accrroding its calibure & power on good roads in city as well on hiway but i am getting low millage say as 52-57.since it is 150cc ,at night we ride litte bit fast so light focus should be improvide. We feel heat of engine at your legs for long drives.I love honda company but people at service station behave very rudley.U should show love and affection. Honda company is live wire for automobiles .
PLZ REAPPLY TO MY MAIL.

hey dude 52-57 is heaven thats awesome I wonder how do u get that…….and abt the engine heat thats true you can feel the heat in ur legs, first i thought its only for my bike i was a little worried also but………….is it a common problem or is it a problem at all. Almost every one who writes reviews abt honda complains abt the service dept why cnt they even try to train them them the customer handling skills or something…Its high time to take care of this particual issue…

hi,
all i would say about this bike is, that this bike rocks.
my next bike would definitely be a honda unicorn.
yes there are certain allegations on the rigidity of this bike but after reading about the improvements made in the bike i think it is worth buying.
so think honda but buy only honda unicorn.

hi all
i am a pround unicorn customer. the vibration is not all o rpoblem as u think . i own a new stickered bike. the bike is solid and it gives a rock solid perfomance with 64 kmpl. it is superb. the only problem is with the toughness of seat.my ass really pains after long hour journey. we can easily rectify it by modifying the seat with more sponge.the bike is very smooth. it gives gud value for money offer. the self start is awesome. most of all the disc brake are very safe not like pulsor. no skidding or nosing like pulsor it is 100% safe during immediate braking. i put on a new 1000 rs HRC exhaust on the bike and now it is awesome. got to feel it. enjoy……..

Hi People,
I bought a honda unicorn on 23rd dec last year. it had a goog performance the first 4 months. it started increasing its mileage from 42 kmpl to 52 kmpl before the first servicing itself. but after the 2nd servicing it started fluctuating from 35 kmpl to 42 kmpl. Everything is fine in the byke except mileage. if anyone can help me out how to maintain the byke so it can have a good mileage.
No backaches, fine ride. Those riding Unicorn know what the byke is. Superb is less to say for it. But the gradual decrease in the mileage of my byke has made me think over it. plz help.

according to my tests, the “definetly male-150″ rules the roads of india in its 150 segment, its better in all aspects when compared to other bikes, one should go for it whitout having any worries, this one will definetly satisfy all ur needs whether its an issue of mileage, power, speed, handling, maintainance etc….,the word definetly truly affirms its meaning here

Hi Friend,
I plan to buy a bike in the next week or so…
My priorities are
1) Excellent ride quality.
2) A decent milage of 40-45 kmpl.
3) Zero maintenance.
4) Good looks.
I am confused between the Pulsar150, Unicorn & Apache.
And how is the new CBZ-Xtreme ?

I have purchased Activa from V.J. Honda, Ulhasnagar bearing chasis no.68436038 Engine No. 8614897 Reg. No. MH/05/AF/4368 on 03/12/06. There was manufacturing defect in the mirrors provided to the vehicle ie. mercury in the mirror.. the same was pointed to the employees at the time of purchase and every time during regular services but the same was not replaced till to-day after giving assurance. Even during last service the same to pointed to Vanisha who straightway declined to replace saying that the above parts are not covered, hence I requested her to allow me to meet the management/partners but the same was turned down. I would request the higher authorities to kindly intervene and arrange to replace the parts at the earliest. For your information my name is Arun Sharma Mobile No. 9423370171 and Landline No. 0251-2251899

I have a strange problem like at times(NOT ALWAYS) when I stop at a traffic sygnal and attempt to restart my Honda Unicorn it only starts after several hard kicks and increasing the tuning screw. The Service centre is also unable to detect the problem, inspite of fiddling with the fuel cork, air-filter or tuning adjuster. Had any body faced a similar problem, my mileage has also deteriorated sygnificantly due to this .
