Apple might soon offer Movie Rentals on Apple iTunes
Apple Insider has learnt that Apple might have a super duper major announcement for us. The company might use the upcoming Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference to announce the debut of movie rentals through the iTunes Music Store.
This would be a major extension to their digital store, which already sells music and music videos. It would also mean a major victory for the movie studios in the country as Apple wanted to sell movies instead of renting them.
As per inside information, Apple seems to have completed their talks with Walt Disney, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, and Warner Bros. and is now in the process of signing similar deals with other major studios.
Renting movies instead of selling them would mean that the company would be using some kind of DRM technology to limit the playback capability for the end user. The playback might be restricted to a particular date or the number of times the movie can be played. After that limit is crossed, the movie would lock itself and would no longer be playable.
It would be interesting to see if this model is in fact adopted by Apple Computers for renting movies on their iTunes digital store.
