Intel launches “Montecito” range of Itanium processors
Microprocessor giants Intel have finally launched the much-awaited “Montecito” range of Itanium processors.
This new range of Itanium processors doubles the performance of the predecessors. This has further boosted the company’s hope that the Itanium would now become more popular and widespread in the market.
Montecito chips now come with two processor cores. This is the first time an Itanium processor has been released with dual cores. The top of the line 9050 unit comes with 1.7 billion transistors and 24MB of high-speed cache memory.
This new series comes in clock speed range of 1.4GHz to 1.6GHz and they would be priced between $696 to $3,692 (1000 units).
Pat Gelsinger, general manger of Intel’s Digital Enterprise Group spoke on these new processors: “We’ve gone through that hard, painful maturation process of a new architecture. This thing is gaining momentum.”
