South Korea cancels LG Telecom’s business license for 3G services
The South Korean government has decided to cancel the LG Telecom’s business license for third-generation (3G) services in the country. This decision was taken after LG opted not to develop the technology.
This development is a disappointment for the country as they were planning to launch a 2-gigahertz 3G wireless communication services based on the CDMA mobile technology.
LG had initially acquired the license to develop and provide this technology in 2001 for 1.15 trillion won.
Now, LG says that the lack of interest and business viability makes them to reconsider this decision and they are no longer interested in further developing this technology.
They are also now concentrating on their own EVDO (Evolution Data Optimized) technology, which they claim is more economical and viable for the markets around the world.
