European Union might investigate Blu-Ray and HD DVD formats
The European Commission has confirmed that they have launched an unofficial antitrust probe into the two emerging DVD formats.
These two formats are Toshiba’s HD DVD format and Sony’s Blu-Ray format. These two companies are working hard on promoting their developed format to make them to the default standard for next generation storage media.
EU has said that they have a feeling that the licensing terms the companies are applying on these two formats breach European competition rules.
An insider source was quoted as saying in the media: “We sent a letter earlier this month to the makers of HD DVD and Blu-ray to request information about licensing.â€
Sony said in a statement on this new development: “There are no indications of any complaint, nor of any antitrust concerns on the part of the Commission or anyone else.â€
