EMusic successful despite the popularity of Apple iTunes

Apple Computers dominate the digital music maker with their Apple iPod range of players and the Apple iTunes digital music store.

And there are players like Napster, Rhapsody, Yahoo Music and others, which try to compete with Apple with similar services, which are not sadly compatible with the Apple iPod player.

Then there is a player named EMusic that sells music in the format everyone would love to own, unprotected MP3. This music is compatible with the Apple iPod and practically any digital music player out there.

The service has around 1 million songs available and they are available through a subscription service. The songs are then owned by the consumers and they come with no DRM restriction. The content provider on this service are not afraid of the digital piracy as the users of their services are generally sophisticated music fans who are less likely to engage in online song-swapping.

The company’s market share has climbed to an impressive 11% second only to Apple iTunes with 67% market share. David Pakman, eMusic’s 37-year-old CEO spoke on this feat: “There’s no question the iPod success has worked in our favor. The consumer confusion over interoperable formats gives us a great advantage.”
