Wikipedia now wants to concentrate on quality

The founder of Wikipedia Jimmy Wales has said in a statement that he now wants the contributors on Wikipedia to concentrate on the quality of content available online rather than the quantity.

The open source online encyclopedia now has more than 1.2 million articles in English alone and it has managed to meet the goal of becoming a comprehensive encyclopedia.

However, Wales while speaking at the Wikimania said that he now wants the Wikipedia to become a more valuable tool by offering reliable and accurate information.

He said: “Although we’ve always had this goal that we should be Britannica- or better quality, we all know we’re not there yet. We can no longer feel satisfied and happy when we see these (article) numbers going up. … We should continue to turn our attention away from growth and towards quality.”

Hello, thank you for your coverage of Wikimania at Harvard university. I am working on transcribing Lawrence Lessig’s and Jwales remarks of yesterday at the moment, so that we can all get a clear picture of the event. Thank you again, just another friend in the ether…
