European telecommunications satellite launched

A Russian booster rocket finally was able to take the European telecommunications satellite to space early Saturday.

This launch came 10 days after another rocket carrying 18 satellites crashed after launch.

The successful launch took place on a Proton-M rocket carrying the Hot Bird 8 satellite. It was launched from the Russia’s main space facility in Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

Russian Federal Space Agency spokesman Igor Panarin confirmed that the satellite has been placed in the orbit. He said: “We are happy with the successful launch that once again has proven the Proton rocket’s reliability.”

The satellite will enter commercial service in October.
