Toshiba to challenge Samsung in Flash memory production

Japanese tech giant Toshiba has said that they plan to expand their flash memory manufacturing capacities to challenge the domination of Samsung in this market.

Toshiba aims to spend 300 billion yen on a factory as they aim to take a major slice of this ever-growing pie.

They would be building a flash memory plant in Yokkaichi, central Japan. This unit would start production of the flash memory chips by October 2007 and raise its monthly output to 67,500 silicon wafers by a year later.

They need this expanded capacity to meet the growing demand from their customers who use these chips in devices like mobile phones, digital cameras and other products.
