Movie industry might make it legal to burn bought downloaded movies to DVDs

The movie industry is considering to make it legal for consumers to legally record movies to blank DVDs.

The DVD Copy Control Association is working on finalizing new rules, which would potentially allow retailers to host movie jukebox kiosks. And it could also allow users to burn legally downloaded movies to DVDs.

However, both of these uses would require special rights-protected blank DVD discs using the Content Scramble System (CSS) for encryption. These DVDs would of course be compatible with all the regular DVD players.

Chris Cookson, chairman of the DVD CCA Board said in a statement: “DVD CCA and its board members are excited at the prospect of being able to offer businesses and consumers an exciting new way to record and enjoy digital content for use in their homes, cars and elsewhere. The creation of new ways to legally create secure DVD content is the logical next step to answer industry and consumer demand for additional legal digital distribution alternatives.”
