Google acquires Neven Vision. Might help them enhance Picasa capabilities

Search engine giant Google has revealed that they are acquiring Neven Vision, a Santa Monica, California that specializes in mobile photo search.

This deal could potentially help the company enhance the capabilities of their Picasa photo management application.

Adrian Graham, Picasa product manager added in a blog post that the gained expertise from this acquisition would help them to extract relevant information from photos. He said: “It could be as simple as detecting whether or not a photo contains a person, or, one day, as complex as recognizing people, places, and objects. This technology just may make it a lot easier for you to organize and find the photos you care about.”

Neven Vision has operations in Japan, Germany, and the U.K. and they have developed a suite of image-recognition and facial-analysis tools for mobile devices.

Google does need a stronger photo management application to take on Yahoo! Flickr and they had been rumored to be interested in an Indian startup named Riya.
