Sony now shipping recordable Blu-Ray disks in USA

Japanese tech giants Sony has confirmed that they have begun shipping 50-gigabyte recordable Blu-ray Disc media to the United States.

Sony is the main developers of the next generation Blu-Ray storage format and is competing with Toshiba who have developed their own HD DVD format.

The company shipped their first titles on the Blu-Ray format in the month of June and has re-engineered the AccuCore technology used in its recordable DVDs to fit the high-definition technology.

These new disks being shipped to the US market are dual-layer, meaning that a total of 25 gigabytes can be recorded on each side. The company claims that these discs can hold around four hours of HD video. Sony would be retailing these discs for around USD 48.

It is a 50GB dual-layer disc. That means each layer is 25GB. There is only one side for recording.
