Maruti prepares assault on Getz with Suzuki Swift

Hyundai may not have much time on their hands to rely on the success of their new car in India named Getz. Because, Maruti has already thought of a master plan to ruin their chances. Autocar India calls it the most important launch from the Maruti stables in 20 years (that means the most important product since Maruti 800). And it sure looks tempting. And it is called Suzuki Swift.

Maruti has not had any major release in quiet some time. All they did in the time being were visual enhancements to their already existing model lineup. The result being, we have a very different looking Maruti Zen and Esteem. Also notable is the fact that Alto has toppled Maruti 800 to be the number 1 selling car in India since last few months. But what it needs to improve on its market share is a totally new car, which would enter a brand new segment and bring in new sales. Suzuki Swift fits perfectly in that space.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

Codenamed YN4, this car is expected to be on roads in the first half of 2005 and would be positioned between Maruti Esteem and Baleno. It takes many existing cars including Palio and Getz heads on. And knowing Maruti’s capabilities to keep costing under control, the pricing can be expected to be a killer one itself. The result of this sudden change in plans from Suzuki, the launch of another much-expected car from Maruti, Ignis looks to be shelved, as Swift looks like a much better product from every angle.

If pricing is between 4 to 5 lakhs then i think it will be a hot seller. If anything goes above 5 lakhs then the salaried class goes to invest in the heavy vehicle. I think if maruti has to gear up the swift changes occured due to hundyai GETZ or PALIO then there main aim should be cover the middle class people.I have surveyed about 50 odd people & around 34 people say that if the pricing is around 4 to 5 then they would definitely prefer SWIFT against GETZ/PALIO, 5 people said they would go for other & rest have mixed response. At last pricing does matter

I have seen the photos of SWIFT on the net and it’s really a Head Turner……..but Maruti has to really keep the price between 4 and streeeeeeeeeeeeeeetch it to a max of 5 lakhs…if u people can do this u will really give others a run.

Size does Matter and the price too, you have done it with the size and styling and if you can do it with the pricin swift arround 4.5lacs it would topple alto no 1 position.,

The Suzuki Swift Power steering version should be launched not more than 4.30/4.40 Lakhs (on Road Price)in New Delhi. Then only it can succeed to be a long haul money spinner for Maruti Udyog. Otherwise it won’t be the affordable to majority of buyers.

The pricing should be between 4 and 4.5l. Anything above 4.5l would surely find early takers but gaining mass appeal in terms of purchase would be difficult. Moreover, Maruti would need to rework the entire portfolio around the Swift. You need to get a eal entry car the 800 @1.60, Alto @2.00, Zen @2.75, Esteem @3.50

This auto design marvel looks just amazing! would easily set the roads on fire… the pricing is the only issue that will control its sales. Seemingly the product looks much much better than sleepy designed Getz but has to be at an attractive pricing……say around 4.30 lacs on road..

When is Suzuki Swift hitting the road? I was planning to go for a Zen, but after seeing Swift models in net, I am eagerly waiting for this. Liked the Design and looks. Hope the pricing will be under 4.5 Lacs in Bangalore. All the best to Maruti.

I have been waiting for the Swift since I came to know of its launch in Dec ‘04. My workplace happens to be just adjacent to Maruti Udyog and I get a clear view of their test track. I happened to see the Swift today, I think it is worth waiting for it. On road it is definitely going to be an eye turner. I got to see only two colours and they were WOW. Pricing has to be within 4.5 Lacs on road else it will be a sheer waste. I wish someone could let me know with reliability as to when it is going to launch so that I can plan accordingly for the interim period.

SUZUKI AGREES TO SWIFT’S MAY DEBUT IN INDIA
    Byas Anand
The Economic Times (Web Edition), The Times of India (Web & Print Edition), The Tribune (Web Edition)

New Delhi: Maruti Udyog Ltd has got its Japanese parent Suzuki Motor’s nod to drive into the burgeoning crossover car market in India in the third week of May with the 1.3-litre Swift.

Swift, the first global model from the Suzuki stables to be developed from scratch with Indian engineers, is expected to sport a tag of around Rs 4.5 lakh. The roll-out plans were approved at a crucial board meet held in Hamamatsu (Japan), sources said.

Swift’s India roll-out will be followed in quick succession by its debut in China, sources said. “It has been decided to build the car only in three countries outside Japan – India, Hungary and China. And Swift will debut in India first, followed by China,” a source said.

Every year, the top brass of Maruti and Suzuki meet in Japan’s Hamamatsu town – which is also Suzuki’s global headquarters – and discuss critical issues concerning the Indian operations. In the past, issues that have figured in the talks include Maruti’s new investment projects and the three-year 50% productivity improvement programme.

During the current visit, while the Maruti board of directors – led by MD Jagdish Khattar – approved a mega Rs 3,271.9 crore investment plan for Maruti, the agenda for the Maruti and Suzuki parleys revolved around Swift.

Around 21 Indian engineers have worked with Suzuki engineers on the design and development of this global model. It will be positioned as an upgrade option for Alto-WagonR-Santro customers.

Swift boasts of one of the finest new age car designs. Maruti will have to price it competitively, and not do a ‘Getz”, by overpricing the vehicle. In order to get a head start it should be priced in between 4.0 to 4.2 lacs on road, of course with power steering. The aggressive pricing will give the more than expected volumes to Maruti

Swift is really a very beautiful car. It can really give lot of competition to other cars but only if price tag is between 4 and 4.3 lac. Anything more than that will give more oppurtunities like Ikon,Getz,Esteem,Palio and list will go on endlessly.

Swift is really a very beautiful and sturdy car. Competition to other cars is only manageable if price tag is between 4 and 4.3 lac on road (Power Steering version). I was planning for Wagaon R but its worth waiting for a Swift. It seems to be an attarctive car depending on the price tag putted by Maruti Udyog.

I am anxiously awaiting the launch. I hope to be the first proud owner of the Swift in the Eastern region. As regards the pricing factor, it should be kept between 4.25 lacs and 5 lacs. I would suggest a discount package for the first 20 / 25 vehicles in each region in order to get the sales head started.

One suggestion : Why dont you book one with the dealer with a condition that if price is more than XXX you will take back the booking amount. And that will ensure that you will get your car before most can. Trust me its a Maruti – Nothing can go wrong. See I am not sure of May 1/2 week but yes Bunty aur Babli is quite sure at the moment

Who or what is Bunty Aur Babli that you keep referring to? Aditya it ain’t easy getting into the factory area and meeting anyone and moreover I don’t have the time. The picture matches.
Vikram the arrangement of booking as you suggest is it at all possible, till now no-one seems to have a clue of the launch and price. How do I negotiate loan and bargain with the dealer on freebies or whatever? I may end up stuck with the dealer if I put my money upfront without a price tag.

Devta Bunty Aur Babli is the new Film by Abhishek and Amitabh Bacchan. This is by YashRaj Production. It also stars Rani. The Suzuki Swift will be launched with the Press Conference of this film as a Rocket Dash Launch – Very Starry launch. Frankly if you really feel that dealers give u lot of freebies – its aint much. They cut corners somewhere to give u those freebies. These days the market is very competitive. Get to a good dealer and you may get the best deal. I havent tried with a Maruti dealer but my friend has tried the same with a Toyota dealer before the launch of the Corolla and it worked. He got a good deal and has a good relationship with the dealer. Delhi Dealer (Name is Galaxy)

i looked at the pics for the swift and the car really looks impressive. but like everyone else uptil now has said i think that if maruti can keep the price under 5 lacs then they have a winner at hand here.

only fallback i see with the swift is that its equipped witht he same 1.3l esteem engine… if the car is priced over the 5 lac band then i strongly feel it should have been equipped with the powerful 1.6l baleno engine…lets see what happens when its launched..

and dealers in delhi are alien to d information tht maruti is launching a new car… i tried d biggest dealers…..( most delhi dealers r dumbos…no offence here)……fingers crossed for a gr8 car…..really need a transport in june…..

    Well Well Guys,
Latest info from a dealer says that SWIFT will be launched with only one variant and price will definitely be about a Lac cheaper than GETZ.Delivery in about a week which I strongly doubt unless Maruti is going to deliver region wise which I don’t think is a possibility.
As for me I think I’ll have to pass this time, need for transportation is getting acute and am actually considering Maruti True Value, to conserve investment at this time and probably go in for the SWIFT at a later date when they come out with more variants. Also there is the issue of the same Esteem engine. Looks like we all have been raving on the superficials and it is high time we check out under the hood. With fuel prices headed north one should be extra careful.
By the way all Omnis, Zens & Altos have been moved away from their usual bay and now being stacked on the test track. The holding bay is filled with SWIFTS. Colours seem to be only 3-4.

    Hi Vikram
I had thought of that (New Car even if its a 800) but am not the type to go in for another car once I get a new one. Kinda confused!
You know what is the problem: I am quite tall and these Maruti ‘Toys’ (800, Alto & Zen) aren’t very comfortable for me. Then if I go in for a 3 box car then I have parking problems at my residence and otherwise too. Hence prefer a 2 box. I have already got a Palio which my wife drives and I find the 2 box ones pretty much fits the bill in all respects.
That is why thinking of bearing with the discomfort for the moment and then will take on a proper vehicle few months down the line. Automart tells me they have 800s & Zens below 25k at decent price 1.8L to 2.5L about 2-3 yrs old. Considering them seriously. What do u think?

come on guys cheer up….they say its the most important launch by maruti in 20 years….dont under estimate the swift. And devta i drive the new zen and my friend has a new euro 3 wagon R,both are superb cars . u wont beleive my zen went to 142kmph on delhi chandihgarh highway with ease, now thats too much for a small car thats givimg me 17-19 kmpl. according to stats the zen is the lowest of all small cars in india, that makes it very stable…and its really easy to drive it in city traffic and comfortable. earlier i drove my dad’s carbuerator zen(1996) and and was so impressed by its seats and control and specially the smooth buttery gear shifts that i bought the new mpfi one for myself and its even better. just go for a test drive and i promise u will be impressed. and consider the swift as the zen’s big brother.it will be something big-hot.

    Hi Devta,
It seems fine to go for old car and then some years down for new car. But practically it may not possible and follow your schedule. If you buy second hand sedan you may not enjoy the ride bcoz the second hand factor always be there in the mind and you never know the past. Instead if you go for new car, even if basic, you will surely enjoy it more than second hand. So why to buy a car if you can not enjoy it. If you are in great need of the car and can”t wait till swift launches then just hire a car for some time say one month. Then enjoy your life with your dream.

Also just checkout AUTOCAR May 2005 edition. They have test drive report of Swift with all the details.

Devta : I think Swift is worth the wait. Putting your money on an used car is not good as you may get much better mileage (read fuel economy) from a new car. The interest cost is much higher in an used car. And if you have the cash as high as 2 lakhs then go ahead..u need not get into the EMI business at all Vik

Hiya All and thanks for your advice Vikram, Chetty & Anil
This transportation thing gets on to me every morning and as I set off for work I swear that I’ll just walk into Maruti dealer and pick up any car True Value whatever. And then I reach my work place I go upto the first floor of my site and there I get the full view of the parking bay full of Swifts and my heart melts and think what the hell lets wait. Then again in the evening the annoyance sets in as I set back for home.
I didn’t know one could get a car on hire for a month in India. Always thought one hires a chauffeur driven one for the standard half-day, full day or for a trip. Do you get one for self-drive? Any clue where and how much cost?
Now lets get back to SWIFT. What is the anticipation on technicalities, mileage, stability etc? And especially the body, Maruti vehicles are notorious for light bodies which is why one hardly gets to see a Maruti without a dent. Since I have a Palio which is heavy and extremely stable. So I would benchmark it against that, I don’t think even Getz matches up to it. Heard that Getz gives about 10kmpl if so it is pathetic. The Palio gives on an average of 11kmph and 12+ on highways and winters when no AC.

Maruti will break the ice by introducing Swift.Swift is a combination of a city car and has a potential of a highway vehical because of the engine and the space. And if it delivers good average between 14-16 then it will be a grand success least to say. What needs to be seen is the diesel variant.

Swift carries a masculine look. It can be called as the HYABOSA engine carrying car. Obviously price does matter,to become famous and be in competition you have to lower the prices. ITS A HOT CAKE IN SUMMERS FOR ALL.

Suzuki Swift is impressive and stylish. The price should be kept between Rs. 4 and 4.5 lakhs in order not to fall out of customers’ choice. Any higher price can invite the slack in demand like versa or getz.

    Hi Gagan
I guess all of us here are drooling over this babe but I think all of us should take step back and watch the developments. As for choice of getting married or buy a Swift, I think there is no contest. You should not get married, in the event you buy a Swift and for some reason things don’t work out you can switch the car.

Swift surely looks great and will be a great product for maruthi provided it is priced agressively like the Indica. The price should be less that 4.5 Lacs – on road for the 1.3 L version with power steering. If it is more then it will loose its attractiveness. Indica’s great success is a proof for this.

it will have three variants-lxi,vxi and zxi. u wont believe zxi has an automatic ac thats only on accord and merc. the price-rs.4,20,000-lxi,4,50,000-vxi and 5,20,000-zxi…thats what tthe showroom guy expect..and it will come in eight colours with 1.3l engine and 85 bhp and 14 inch alloys.

watta a great loking car 4om Maruti….Swift is the best one! but while people are talking about pricing it sumwhere 4-4.5 Lacs…in my opinion , why don’t Maruti prices it aggresively at 3.75-4lacs for the entry level n mid level models….they can achieve break even with higher volumes.
This is the way by which they can create excitement in the market and achieve greater success! and smash the competetion completely.

SWIFT does look too sporty for india. But a tag above 4.6 lac for the top end variant would make its market dull and uninterested ! Hats off to MARUTI – SUZUKI for such a cutie pie, but if it’s INDIA, price does matter (u bet)& specially when u hav tough competition from cars like GETZ, FUSION, INDIGO, PETRA. As i had said earlier basic model should cost under 4 lac. Lets wait for the lauch now keepin fingers crossed ! Lauching it wid yash chopras -BUNTY N BABLI seems to be a good ploy. But then they should not forget tht by doing tht, they r targeting mostly the middle class among the masses & so the price would DEFINITELY matter. I guess Vxi model should cost about 4.2 lacs on road. I would definitely buy a swift in the first week of its launch if a vxi costs me 4.2 l max.

I am not at all happy with features on Z model at 5.2L.

I would have expected those buttons on steering (volume control, next/prev track) to stay. Also I would have expected a Automatic transmission. Also, 1.5L engine would also have been nice..

Both these are stripped, even from the highest model. Maruti is understimating Indians need for good features. They will pay in the long run for this mentality..

i totally agree with rohit, at 5.2 l , one expects to be treated at par with other country customers…5.2l is a handsome amount for a 1.3l car.. and over and above, the 1.5l model is missing altogether..

swift was never meant to be the common man’ car… i really dont understand why they have ended up with a striptease on features..

Since I did earlier research and aware about all facts dealer was impress as very few people are aware about launch that they want to keep all secret and lunch eveyrhing in mega style.

They have 8 colurs and I selected orange as thats my fav colour. As usual Red looks most stunning.

Sorry guys about my l-o-n-g absence. Had a detailed look at a Swift (don’t ask me where and how) Its good. Initial observations : There are 3 variants : LXI, VXI AND ZXi. As I had told earlier the ZXI is fully loaded with features like D+P Airbags, ABS, Auto AC, Alloy Wheels (14″). The Swift is really a very futuristic looking product. The Seat surface material is not very good for all the 3 variants. I personally feel that they could have been better. The LXI can come under Rs. 4 lakhs or just about that price. Maruti intends to sell about 5,000 u/ts annually. The product could be a clear winner but there could be concerns of fuel consumption as this might not be as fuel efficient as Maruti pedigree in India. The car is on a heavier build and I personally liked the car as you can clearly LOOK different on the roads. The LXI does not have a TACHOMETER..but has an EPS. Overall a very good BUY…

My Dear Fellow Indians… Let me assure everybody that the Indian Swift will NEVER have the goodies present in the European Swift. No Automatic Transmission (not even the manual automatic one), No steering controls, No high end engine.
For direct injection diesel engines you have to wait for a year or two.

LXi has only Power Steering..where’s the Power Windows. You get that even in a Zen Lxi. Fuel Economy..should be sililar to esteem, I guess as it has the same engine. But again you cant comment untill and unless it lands on the Indian roads..
ZXi is nothing but a bloated product and not worth the 5 lac price tag.

ahaan, delhi ex 4…. sounds ok…..now temme , which dealership did u get to see that beauty at….coz m sittin near SAYA….n i really feel like havin d Zxi, safty n comfort are somthin that made m wait so long to buy a car….n wud lov if they cud pack Zxi at 5-5.1 on road……it would b a steal…n mind u, the profit reports of maruti reflect how much dey make on d cars….cant dey squeeze a bit of profit for d sake?…. i m sure, if dey do it, swift wud outsell palio+getz+sail+fusion+icon ( yes, icon was on my list wen i was considering a “small”car, coz it has somwat similar specs that d oders in d list hav…no doubt of an added adv of a boot) in a matter of 6 mnths..that wud surely compensate d profit margin, wont it?…. n 5000/yr wud b changed to 10k( or mayb more..)………

btw, hav u booked d car…or seen it at a dealership, if u hav, plz post d address n contact of d dealer… wud b a real help..coz i hear on d forums that swift is overbooked already n official bookin started at 3rd may 10:00 am…

vijay, i seriously suggest that u drive both of them….dont trust nebody, trust ur heart….swift is a new car…while NHC is proven( except for its performance) on indian roads…. n swift n city ( that too Gxi) fall in clearly seperate classes…and mind u, if u lookin for beauty, swift is d name, lookin for som peppy power, swift is d name…but if u lookin for space, CITY is much BETTER.. ( official specs for swift say that its smaller than getz, tho more wide)….n swift’ mileage is puttin m to doubt already, sombody was quotin it at 1000kg+….. it cud b palio’ younger sibling… tho UK figures on mileage look promising at 13-18…but d traffic is diff ova there….

so, i suggest, u wait for another two months ( coz city vs. swift is a real big dilemma)…… n one out of track suggestion….try n get a OHC vtec frm somwhere ( n if it low on odo, excellent)…n for info, civic is being planned for a launch in india… mayb this yr end…

This maruti swift although looks similar to Europian one but the interior is way different!! Followin features are noted missing..
    1. The power mirror
    2. The volume control and channel control from steering
    3. Inferior dash board
the Exterior is appealing but Interior is clumsy and cheap..ABS and Air Bags—I’m not sure of..
The information is based on the what appears from interior view of Maruti Swift in http://www.Marutiswift.com. as of now.
They may be present in the “super higher” variant of swift!!!

We have been owning a maruti for the past 5 years. I haven’t found any problem with it. Excellent service across the country (though I never really required one).
With swift, maruti is all set to gain its position.

I also have a 17yr old M800 (Dec1987 model), which still has its original engine (not been overhauled) and paint, and gives an average of 18-19Kpl in city and 23-24Kpl on highway. I have taken it upto 120Kmph quite often, when the road permits. So there is no question of reliability…I will vouch for that!! Ofcourse driving in and around Delhi means that there are a few scratchs and small dents…but thats pretty inconsequential when the car is doing such a grat job.
And so I have just booked the Swift VXi (ABS)as well.

I drove the swift. It DISAPPOINTS. cheap interiors, rattling noises from the back, water filled in the side lights (near door), plastic near rear view mirror falling, thinnest plastic used on inner side of doors, cheap power window buttons. Drove the Getz immediately after that. Had a newfound respect for the GETZ after seeing the Swift. Hope Hyundai reduces prices of Getz a bit.

If the pricing is between 3 to 4 lacks all the salaried employes could plan to be owned. But the perfomence of the car is not good as maruthi’s other models chance for failure.

buzz off guys , who say SWIFT has got anythin cheap or bad ! it requires a sight for the future to appreciate the SWIFT.. i wont b surprised if the SWIFT b’coms 2nd largest seller for maruti after Maruti – 800.. sorry for the language … but it hurts when u say tht such a gr8 car has got cheap interior or wateva! ( i agree if u say it is CHEAP as compared to getz .. if u take it literally , only then )

I am physically challenged person. right now I am using Maruthi 800 car for disabled. Recently i was informed that Maruthi doesn’t manufacture car for disable. MARUTHI SHOULD RESUME THE MANUFACTURING OF CAR FOR DISABLED. It is a boon to many physically challenged people… which make their mobility easy, I don’t know whether this is right forum to give a request on this regard. I will be happy if Maruthi resumes the manufaturing of car for disabled. Maruthi should understand the need, neccessity and IMPORTANCE of the vehicle. And ofcourse they are not giving it for free, and i don’t the reason to stop manufacturing car for disabled. Hoping the best!

I got a Swift VXi booked last week….n was stunned by the looks when I saw it. Was actually planning for Accent but changed my mind once I saw Swift outside my office. Actually my office is next to Maruti Udhyog’s manufacturing plant in Gurgaon and I saw the car from the terrace of my office ;-) much before its launch. Although I have got the Silver color booked but Orange and Blue are also stunning. The only concern is it being low on mileage + I would have loved to have ABS in base version of VXi and tubeless tyres also. Waiting for the day I get it delivered, till then I see myself driving my Swift everyday in my dreams :)

I was just plannning for a santro and got to know the launch of Swift, then changed my mind to Swift since It has the retro look that lends it a superior aesthetic edge over it competition. It’s a WOW car.

Coming after booking a Swift vxi. I think the ABS should have been included with atleast VXI version.. When i did a test drive of this car, i fell in love with it – so do my wife. The leg room space, power, tyres -too good and apropriate!!!. Good car to go with.

Swift has a pathetic mileage!!! gives me an average of around 8-9 kmpl. i am unimpressed. My earlier car alto use to give me around 18-19 kmpl in the city. i havent tested the mileage on highway but one thing i am very sure of swift is that it wont deliver anything above 13 kmpl on the higway

to add to the above comment, maruti suzuki officials had to say a line on the mileage issue. they say it will be delivering 14-15 kmpl in the city only after the three designated free service.let see!! its all about wait and watch. by that time keep burning precious fuel and your wallet ofcourse :))

The Swift is really stunning. But what i dont digest is the mileage. Suzuki should do something on this count. Also the back of the car needs restyling, it looks weird. The front of the car is amazing. Once the mileage and the back are improved coupled with some reduction in price, there will be hell a lot of takers for this machine from Maruti.

Car for DISABLED ?????????? A DREAM, which can only become true if Corporate sectors especially TATA can take interest & modify their INDICA for it. The Zen is too costly to be purchased by Majority of the disabled groups (80 %). Either again MARUTI 800 should be allowed by govt. to be designed for disabled. Otherwise no hearing for DISABLED by DEAF & DUMP & offcourse BLIND Govt.
