Sony doing great with their digital SLR cameras in Japan

Consumer electronics giant Sony has captured more than a fifth of Japan’s digital single-lens reflex camera market in its debut month.

They are now the third largest player in the market and trail Canon and Nikon.

The company launched their alpha DSLR-A100 model in July this year and captured a 19 percent share in the three weeks to Aug. 20 in the Japanese market.

This performance is much better, than what Sony itself had expected from these products.

Market analyst Shigehiro Tanaka spoke on this news announcement: “On top of having a powerful brand name for digital cameras, Sony sent out a clear message with the $1,000 pricing for a 10.2 megapixel camera, which led to the high market share. Sony successfully used Minolta’s assets, as many consumers bought only the body.”
