Universal Music to support ad-supported free download service

Universal Music has some big names in their portfolio including U2, The Killers and Audioslave. And the company has now said that they would make its catalog of recordings and music videos available for free on an ad-supported Web site being planned for launch later this year.

The deal has been signed on with SpiralFrog.com and the two companies would be sharing the revenues.

Users would be able to download songs and videos for free after registration. However, they would be barred from burning them on a CD. Fortunately, Microsoft’s PlayForSure technology would be supported and the users would be able to listen to these songs on compatible digital music players.

This would make them incompatible with the industry leading Apple iPod range of digital music players.
