Toshiba HD DVD drives coming to Europe in November

The primary developer of the HD DVD technology Toshiba has confirmed that they would be launching its first two High Definition DVD players (HD DVD) in Europe by November.

These players would cost between 599 and 999 euros. Incidentally, these prices are way above the prices of HD DVD players in the US market.

The launch of these players and related media is important for the company as they are taking on Sony’s Blu-Ray technology in the storage media market.

Both the groups are trying to set their format as the standard for next generation storage media. Toshiba was the first off the block in the US market as they launched the players way before Sony managed to release their Blu-Ray players.

They might not be able to achieve the same feat in Europe considering Samsung has said in their own release that they would bring its Blu-ray player to Europe in October at around 1,400 euros. The high price of these Blu-Ray players might dampen the interest of the general consumer.
