They hoped to protect music copyright (Sony publishes music, unlike Apple) but people just now use the ipod/MP3 units instead of SONY ATRAC. However, have to say that ipods are just music players, SONY MD units are much more. SONY MD recorders are serious digital recording machines with microphone, line and digital inputs. Also battery life of the SONY MD players is fantastic: some top models with external battery cases play up to 90 hours without a recharge. Show me a MP3 unit or ipod that does this. But again - with all the advanced technology SONY disgruntled many people by restricting up/downloads via computer. Only with latest models can transfer microphone recordinds digitally to a computer.
