Segway recalling all sold scooters for a software update

Segway is recalling around 23,500 Segway electric scooters sold to consumers and commercial customers for a software upgrade.

The company said in a statement that the bug in the software could unexpectedly apply reverse torque to the wheels. This can possibly knock the rider off the vehicle.

This report was confirmed by the U.S. Consumer Product and Safety Commission, which said that the company has already received six reports of scooters not operating properly and riders suffering injuries to their heads and wrists.

This recall affects all Segway Personal Transporter i167, i170 and i180 (i Series) models, the p133, XT (cross-terrain transporter), GT (golf transporter) and i2 models, as well as all e167 (e Series) models.

Segway spokeswoman Carla Vallone said in a statement: “We are focusing on high concentration areas, so our representatives can get there and upgrade as many units as possible.”

Customers can fix an appointment with a Segway dealer to get the software upgrade. This upgrade takes just around 15 to 20 minutes to install. They can be reached at 00-750-6557 or at www.segway.com.
