.mobi open for open registration now
.mobi domains are now open for registration from generic public. This particular top-level domain name is for websites, which are specifically designed for the mobile and small screen platform.
Some of the supporters of this standard include big names like Microsoft, Google, Vodafone, Ericsson, Samsung, T-Mobile, and Nokia.
They are aiming to promote this domain extension for creating a web of websites optimized for the mobile platform, which is expected to become one of the largest accessing media for the internet in the coming years.
Neil Edwards, dotMobi CEO said in a statement: “In the past, using the Internet on a mobile device presented huge obstacles for the consumer. We’re creating a link between mobile operators, Internet content providers, and the millions of mobile users seeking a consistent, reliable, and enjoyable Internet experience.”
Some 13,000 businesses signed up for a .mobi domain during the private registration period for trademark holders. However, market analysts believe that this was just to prevent cyber squatting and not all of these would turn into mobile platform websites.
