Google: From Local to Personalized Searches
Google already dominates the internet search engine market. In addition, they started with localized American searches with Google Local. Using the localized searches, they started the Google SMS Services.
Next step in user convenience, which is catching Search Engine’s attention, is personalized searches. A9 started the trend, which utilizes Amazon login system. The website remembers the searched keywords and visited pages if the user is logged in. And these can be accessed from any machine connected to the net from the same login id. In addition, A9 toolbar adds more personalized features with webpage comments and site info. Ask Jeeves was the next one to go personal with MyJeeves. Yahoo also has similar personalized searches in beta testing.
Google Founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page said on Monday that Google was working on a similar product that would let user have their own personal Google search engine for online researching. They mentioned about Flavored Searches being developed in the Google Labs. They also tried to clarify about a possible browser from Google by saying that they are trying to get more out of existing browsers but do not plan to reinvent the wheel. Still, they did not exactly rule out the possibility.
I am not sure if they are talking about enhancing Google Personalized Beta into more customizable personal search engine which would rely upon user logins instead of cookies.
