IBM Power6 server chips to clock 5.0GHz
US based tech giant IBM has said that they are aiming to touch clock speeds of 5.0GHz with their Power6 server chip as they aim to take on competing products from Intel and Sun Microsystems.
The company added that despite this high performance, the processors would not overheat as it uses small, 65-nanometer process geometry, high-bandwidth buses running as fast as 75GB per second, and voltage thresholds as low as 0.8 volts.
They plan to start shipping these processors sometime in the middle of next year and would be targeting fields requiring powerful servers with two to 64 processors.
Market analysts believe that if IBM manages to deliver what they are promising, they really can provide an excellent alternative to existing solutions in the market for high-end computing requirement for airplane design and automotive crash simulation.
