DriveTrust: Seagate preparing a secure hard disk with built-in encryption

Market leaders Seagate has revealed that they are working on launching hard drives with built-in encryption.

Seagate’s Momentus 5400 FDE.2 would come loaded with a special encryption chip. It would make it impossible for anyone to read data off the disk without some form of authentication.

This hard disk is being designed for use in notebook computers which are more prone to data theft. The drive would be launched in capacities of 80GB, 120GB, or 160GB.

Seagate plans to allow users to gain access to the disk using a password but they expect PC manufacturers to develop other authentication systems such as fingerprint and smart card readers.
