$100 laptop should be out this year
Quanta Computer has said in a statement that they are going to roll off the USD 100 laptops from their production lines this year itself.
The mass production of these laptops would begin early next year. Taiwan based company is the world’s largest contract notebook PC manufacturer and they had earlier planned to begin mass production of the low-cost laptops in the second quarter of next year.
Quanta is expecting to ship 5 million to 10 million of the laptops next year. They already have confirmed orders from Argentina, Brazil, Libya, Nigeria, and Thailand.
These laptops are part of the project named One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) which is aimed at ensuring school children in developing countries stays up-to-date using these laptops to connect to the internet wirelessly.
This laptop would run a Linux OS and would feature a 500MHz microprocessor from Advanced Micro Devices. It would also have wireless broadband connectivity and 128MB of DRAM and 500MB of flash memory for storage.
