Zango to pay $3 million to the U.S. government over adware allegations
Internet marketing company Zango has agreed to pay as much as USD 3 million to the US government. This would help them settle the allegations which claimed that the company secretly installed their adware programs on millions of computers.
The settlement would also require that the company provide a way to remove disruptive adware programs from their systems. They would also have to make sure that these consumers do not get affected in the future.
FTC consumer protection chief Lydia Parnes said in a statement: “Consumers’ computers belong to them, and they shouldn’t have to accept any content they don’t want.”
FTC also added that the programs distributed by the company made the adware hard to find and remove.
Zango replied by saying that they were wrong in depending too much on third-party affiliates. The company said: “Unfortunately, this allowed deceptive third parties to exploit our system to the detriment of consumers, our advertisers and our publishing partners. We deeply regret and apologize for the resulting negative impact.”
