Tata Indicom and AMD to launch Personal Internet Communicator

It looks like a hi-tech briefcase and can revolutionize low cost internet connectivity in India. AMD has developed this box called Personal Internet Communicator in an initiative called “50×15″ which is aimed at providing internet access to 50% of the world population by the year 2015. It is a low cost device, which is powered by technologies from Solectron, Seagate, Samsung, and Macromedia.

It is powered by an AMD Geode GX500 366MHz chip with 128MB SDRAM DDR, 3.5″ 10GB HDD, 4xUSB, 56kbps modem, audio, MS Windows CE with XP extender for XP applications compatibility. Good enough to provide the capabilities to run internet related applications like a browser, messenger and routine applications like Word Processors and Spreadsheets. AMD is not just planning to produce and deliver the systems but they are also planning to work with local authorities to popularize the device.

The suggested price is approximated at around USD185 with bare necessities like a keyboard, mouse, and software. For USD249, it would also come with a monitor. Reports from AMD says, PIC is designed to be a high quality, easy-to-use, robust consumer device that meets users’ needs while being able to withstand the potentially harsh environmental demands of high-growth markets, which can include inconsistent power voltage, dust and dirt.

India’s major IT Giant Tata is the first company to adapt this device and would be test marketing this device in around five cities in India. Other partners include CRC in Mexico, and Cable and Wireless in the Caribbean.
