New iBook costs INR 67,400 in India

The latest model of the Apple iBook running a G4 processor with a built-in AirPort Extreme 54 Mbps 802.11g wireless networking is now available for sale in India starting at hefty prices of INR 67,400 and more. These prices are exclusive of taxes and does not include costing of a carry case considering the prices on official website are even more. Comparing it to the cheapest model available in USA which start from USD 999, it is an expensive deal for Indian consumers. Perhaps, this is the reason why Apple Computers are virtually unknown in India.

These laptops are available from the Apple’s online Asia store and Apple’s authorized dealers in India. The iBook line includes PowerPC G4 processors running up to 1.33 GHz and an available slot-load SuperDrive for burning DVDs, as well as Apple’s breakthrough iLife suite for managing digital music and photos, making movies and music and creating professional-quality DVDs.

As per Apple website:
As the lightest all-in-one consumer notebook on the market, the 12.1-inch iBook G4 weighs in at a mere 2.2 kg. The 14.1-inch model weighs just 2.7 kg. Many textbooks weigh more than either one. The iBook G4 is thin, too — a svelte 3.42 cm, to be exact — making this impressive notebook small enough to fit in a backpack and light enough to carry around all day.

Dont waste your money in buying a laptop in India. Ask a friend/relative to get it from abroad.

Laptops are generally expensive in India. This one is expensive yes, but is still a fairly good deal when compared to equivalent models from say, IBM or Dell. Its sad that Macs are so rare in India.

I agree, a comparable dell laptop would cost around 50k in india. An apple is an apple. Its exclusive and it is COOL. A small premium is apparent, but a difference of 500 dollars compared to american prices… Its atrocious. I can buy a U2 iPod in that. Ofcourse in America and not in India. :p

Laptop is costly.. and after that it is difficult to get sotware to run on it other than what comes with the OS.

Finding legit software for Mac would be as tough as finding legit software for Windows. :) An Apple dealer is what you need.

an avg. person in US can afford a laptop from 15 days salary… in india this amount is equal to 6-12 months salary.. ! do the math.. ! mr Jobs really needs to ‘think different ????’

  7. Biswajit | October 30th, 2004 at 8:43 pm

Hey are we allowed to have 802.11g on laptops in india… i think there’s a govtt of india restriction on 802.11 “g”. THIS IS SERIOUS !!!!!

It really is a pity about macs in India. I currently live in Germany and switched to macs about a couple of years back after 5 years of using a PC. The difference in quality is painfully obvious from the moment you open the package till you turn the machine off. All apple users will tell you that and MOSt apple users are ex-PC users. I own an i-book g3 which i use for normal applications and a Powerbook 15 inch G4 which is basically my studio (I’m a musician). Well whatever, I tried gettingin touch with apple india a couple of months back trying to find out what the servicing facilities are there as an apple user, in case i go back. I was deeply disappointed at receiving an extremely impersonal email saying all information regarding apple in india can be afounf at the ‘following link’. It was obvious that my email hadnt really even been read.

I’m a little worried now since I’ve got so used to macs…id hate to have to get back to being a pc user (specially for audio applications..mac is the industry standard) and am really curious how things are gonna turn out if i find myself being one of a very few mac users in India in a few years. I really hope they make an effort to directly get in touch with their consumers instead of leaving it to stupid ignorant idiots like that guy in Chandigarh who wanted to see mony first….

all ye indian indians, wake up…get on a mac and welcome to the mac world…u can do everything you do on a pc on a mac….and you can do it better…..contrary to what you ppul might think, its not too difficult to get software for macs, there are any no of free downloads available for macs too…want to record streaming audio, video, rip dvds, ….u have them all…the only thing lacking on a mac right now is support for indian languages but believe me it can easily be fixed…not a big deal…mac is a mac is a mac….a pc by any other name would smell just as bad….

if all you want to do is browse, listen to music, watch movies, ms office, torrent download, even program…a mac is for you…the only thing i am not too sure about a mac is whether u will get mac versions of engg softwares like autocad or proe or hypermesh or ansys or nastran and such other stuff…anyways, you are not even supposed to be having it without paying the thousands to millions of dollars of license fees…so dont complain…

guys, while you say that the Apple notebooks are expensive, also consider this one line which one of my customers told me after purchasing a mac - “Apple is the only company in the world which can combine design, hardware and software and still deliver an excellent package, anything else is a compromise”. The mac are not expensive as you think they are. Take a 12″ notebook with in-built combodrive, and BT with 40GB HDD with shock detection, 512MB ram, 32MB dedicated video RAM and OS, carry case inclusive. 55K/-(inclusive of taxes)

compare this to a dell 12″ and see the price difference.

Aah, yes, add a external RAM or change the config on your windows machine, they’ll toss your warranty out of your window…..

while that is the case for notebooks, can you show a equivalent of iMac or Mac mini on the windows platform…. there is no comparision on these lines…

  27. Paul | January 18th, 2006 at 9:45 am

It’s a shame that laptops sell for so much in india. I guess because of the low demand, they have to sell them for more. Apple is a North American powerhouse. DOn’t know how they’re doing in Asia. If anyone is interested, I’m selling my G4. My e-mail is acuraracing@gmail.com
