European Commission comments on the growing spam mail menace
European Commission has said in a statement that unsolicited e-mails continue to plague European citizens and they now account for around 50 and 80 percent of all messages sent to mail inboxes.
EU Media Commissioner Viviane Reding added that European Union governments should take strong actions to step up their fight against this menace.
A report released by the European Union said that only two European nations Netherlands and Finland are taking strong steps to enforce the 2002 law to crack down on spam.
EU spokesman Martin Selmayr added: “Spam is still … making up to between 50 and 80 percent of the mails that we are receiving in Europe and two-thirds of that is coming from outside the European Union.”
He further said that Dutch authorities have succeeded in reducing the spam problems by using fines to get businesses to fall in line with the EU rule.
