Blockbuster believes HD downloads would take time to become popular
Blockbuster Inc. has said that they are looking for potential partners to offer movies on downloads. However, the company added that such kind of a service would not hamper the sales of high definition DVDs in the market for quite some time.
The company said that it would take a while before the net connectivity becomes good enough to support such high downloads on a large scale. Company Chief Executive John Antioco said in a statement: “We think packaged media remains king for a long time.”
He further said that they expect sales of movie downloads to touch about $1 billion by 2009. This would still be less than a percent of overall film industry revenue.
Their primary rival in the market Netflix has already said that they will release details of its upcoming download service in the first quarter of 2007. These are exciting times for the consumers as they get more options to get access to their favorite movies.
