NTT DoCoMo to work on developing broadcast services for cellphones

Japanese mobile service provider NTT DoCoMo has said that they would be working with Fuji Television Network, Nippon Broadcasting System and other companies to develop broadcast services for cellphones. This partnership with also include satellite broadcaster Sky Perfect Communications and trading house Itochu.

All these companies would be forming a joint venture in December to develop new mobile multimedia services with an investment of 30 million yen.

These companies are also planning to promote homegrown digital broadcast standard for mobile TV and would be demanding frequency bands from the regulatory authorities to provide such services in the market.

Local regulatory bodies in the country have said that they might allow distribution of content made specifically for mobile phones starting from 2008. NTT DoCoMo has incidentally already taken a 2.6 percent stake in Fuji TV as they aim to boost their content development efforts for the mobile platform.
