Dell launches PowerEdge Energy Smart servers

US based makers of computers Dell have launched a new range of energy efficient server products. These new servers are branded PowerEdge Energy Smart and they are energy-efficient variants of the existing PowerEdge line of servers.

The company introduced PowerEdge Energy Smart model 1950 and 2950 servers. Dell claims that these server products deliver a 25 percent improvement in performance per watt compared to the standard 1950 and 2950.

Dell added that these servers come with processors, which consume only 40 watts of power versus the 65 watts or 80 watts drawn in standard servers. They are also loaded with more efficient hard drives so as to reduce power consumption.

Jay Parker, director of PowerEdge Servers in the Dell Product Group spoke on these new product launches: “We would expect somewhere in the 10 to 20 percent range of our customers to be interested in this product and to ultimately migrate to this. But there is a whole other set of customers who need more configurability or [for whom] power efficiency is not a priority.”
