Tresco latest in Digital Music Store rush
Supermarket chain Tresco enters the market dominated by Apple Computers with their iTunes music store. They are the latest in the series of new players in the market, which now includes Microsoft, Musicmatch, and even Virgin. They are using the technological services provided by Microsoft so iPod users cannot use songs from Tresco’s music store. However, around 70 other music players are supported and more will be added with time.
They have on offer more than five lakh songs and would be charging a flat rate of 79p for a song and £7.99 for albums, which is pretty much the same as iTunes Store rates. The network is being promoted by Cable & Wireless and keeps a track of purchases made by a customer. Therefore, even if you lose your bought songs, you would be able to get it again for free for a limited number of times to security reasons.
As per reports:
Once downloaded the DRM technology contained within the track will allow customers to “burn” that song or album on to a CD up to three times and transfer it on to up to three players.
The whole idea of these stores to compete against the best in business iTunes is to give more flexibility to the users in what player they want to listen to the tracks. Apple restricts the usage of songs downloaded from iTunes to only iPod users.
