NTT DoCoMo recalling Sanyo batteries for safety reasons

Japan’s dominating mobile service provider NTT DoCoMo has said that they are recalling 1.3 million battery packs powering their cell phones because of safety reasons.

NTT said that these batteries could generate excessive heat and rupture. NTT procured these batteries from Sanyo Electric Co. and these were installed in Mitsubishi Electric Corp’s D902i phones.

The company added that these phones were supplied in the domestic market of Japan. NTT DoCoMo added that they would contact the owner of these cellphones directly.

NTT said that the problem occurs due to a deformed parts installed in the battery. The battery could generate excessive heat and rupture during or immediately after charging if the surface of the battery is dented.

Market experts believe that this recall could cost the company as much as $35 million and sources claim that they knew about these problems about six months ago.
