IBM to expand presence on Second Life
US based tech giant IBM has said that they are going to expand their presence on the virtual world project named Second Life.
The company has already developed 12 “virtual islands” and most of these would be made open to general people on the island.
Some areas would be kept private for the company officials including the company’s CEO.
IBM’s chief technologist, Dr. Irving Wladawsky-Berger however said that this involvement in the virtual world scene is in experimental phase and they do not see any profits from this venture in the near future.
Wladawsky-Berger further said on this project: “Perhaps we can make major changes in how to teach kids of all sorts, including kids with disabilities and kids from poorer communities who might be disadvantaged in very ‘text oriented’ styles of teaching.”
Some other companies having a presence on Second Life include big names like Toyota Motor Corp., Adidas AG and American Apparel Inc.
