Sony settles the dispute related to rootkit in audio CDs
Sony would be paying $1.5 million, plus restitution to consumers as they are now aiming to settle the lawsuits related to the controversial technology delivered through their audio CDs in the market.
These audio CDs carried potentially harmful DRM technologies aiming to prevent the customer from downloading the tracks onto their computers.
They would be settling the lawsuits filed by the states of California and Texas. And both of these states would now receive $622,000 in civil penalties and $128,000 in legal fees.
Sony would also be providing refunds of up to $175 to consumers in Texas and California for computer repairs.
Consumers now have 180 days to file a refund claim and they can submit a form available at Sony BMG’s Web site. They would however be required to provide documentation of repair expenses.
