Toshiba working on Cell processor based products for the living room

Sony and Toshiba were partners in the development of the Cell processor which powers the recently launched Sony Playstation 3 gaming console

Now, both the companies are working on integrating this processor in their consumer electronics product and they both want to be the first one to be out in the market.

Yoshihide Fujii, president and chief executive officer of Toshiba’s digital media network company said in a statement that they are working on Cell powered products but refused to give any details on them.

However, he did say that they want to beat Sony by launching their products early in the market.

Interestingly, Sony and Toshiba are also fighting it out to emerge the leaders in the next generation storage media technology. Sony has developed the Blu-Ray format which is also included in the PS3 player. Toshiba has developed their own HD DVD format.

Nevertheless, it might still take another year before any of these companies can launch a product featuring the cell processor in the market. Mina Naito, a spokeswoman for Tokyo-based Sony said: “The first priority is the PlayStation and nothing beyond that has been decided yet.”
