Why MSN Search is good for the consumer?

Microsoft launched the second beta release of MSN Search with little fanfare. There is no doubt it is good (ED: When compared to current search engine powering MSN), but few consider it as a threat to Google for sometime to come. It brings to us customizable search algorithm, which is a first for any of the popular search engines. It let users to specify the kind of criteria to prefer when searching. In the end, we get more personalized searching as we and not the search engine decide what is important for a site to come on top.

There are other benefits out of Microsoft’s development of the search engine, which would end up powering MSN. No matter how much we love or hate the Internet Explorer, it is a fact that lot of people out there do not worry about what browser they are using to surf the web. And with MSN Search integrated in that browser, they end up getting a better search engine.

And the best thing of all… Microsoft’s continues efforts in search engine market, no matter how successful or unsuccessful it is would keep Google on their toes. Recent days have seen Google being criticized for not giving much preference to new websites and it is a common fact that manipulating Google Search results is not that complicated as one would hope. Google having more active competition would result in a better Google for all of us!

No one wants Google to get complacent due to lack of competition and Microsoft is the worse kind of competition a company can hope for…

Wha??? Just because something is integrated, that makes it a better product?

I think its a bit of a stretch to call it a customizable search algorithm. They give you ways to restrict your search in a nice UI. Other engines support this as well but it’s less easier to customize.

Yeah, just like IE was good for the consumer when it destroyed Netscape.

If MS did win a search engine war then MS would immediately stop developing their search engine.

Give me Google and Firefox, I don’t want anything to do with MSN and IE.

microsoft have blown it, they’ve proven with decades of predatory practices and butchering standards, that they’re not to be trusted with ANYTHING. The sooner they die the better computing will be for everybody.

“There is no doubt it is good,….”

Actually, there is a lot of doubt that it is good. Several tech sites have posted dubious restults returned by the engine as compared to the results returned by google et al.

If you are going to make a statement like this, about a new product – let’s have some evidence.

Algorithmic Web Search. Just what is this? Sounds like some medical term having been used. Well in a way, it is just that. Algorithmic Search isn’t a new form of high tech, but one that is just now making itself known. A number of weeks ago, Microsoft had announced a new search tool, allowing one to gather more information off the the net, at a far greater speed. Google has been working upon this same form of tool, and just recently made this new technology available for download. (Having beat Microsoft to the punch!) Soon, Yahoo will be offering this same service to its users. Joining this happy bunch, will soon be Amazon and E-Bay just to name a few.

How does this new search technology work? Let’s say you enter the following search term, into your favorite search engine. ‘Wright Brothers’ Your search request runs about the net, gathering all known information from all corners of the globe. Including having gathered information, directly off of your own personal hard-drive! (Including but not limited to, all documents, chat sessions, web history, e-mail, address book and photos.) Today, (23 Oct 04) but hidden in the deepest corner of the news, reports were made that this new search tool, has been compromised. Believe me, it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to have seen this one coming!

Funny… I thought Microsoft was a corporation, in the business of making money, playing the “capitalism game”. If so, it seems they’ve done pretty well – I think. Competition is what should drive Microsoft to better products not our whining. In capitalism, one objective is to beat the competition – you can even use your strength. And, if you get too good at that, its the government’s job to limit you, not your job to limit yourself. Seems like all of this is working to me.

well, msn search is better than ever before. it gives me better results and the page cache is updated than ever before.

if you take google as the reference point, MSN surely does not look very good. But that is not what I talked about here.

As for it being integrated… The whole point is to get people to use a better product. and competition helps for the market leader to stay competitive.

Is this “Why MSN Search is good for the consumer?” written by Bill Gates himself? Most if not all comments are favorable to MS.
It is the job of big evil corporations like MS to try to dominate the markets and it is my job to try my best not to use those products to stop them from world domination.

everybody seems to beleive that we live in a world where competition brings us the best products.
Is it true? 95% people use Internet Explorer, not because it is the best browser but because they don’t know better.
Competition is not worth much without education. If people knew better, microsoft would be out of business.
The problem is when you have, like microsoft, 90% of the market, you have enough marketing power to brainwash your customers, make them dependant of your products, and destroy competition before it’s even born. Capitalism is NOT competition. It is war.

From where I look at it, the post is pointing to MSN Search resulting in a better Google for us. And as for competition in the Browser market is considered, IE just got a decent enough competitor in Mozilla Firefox. And the way Firefox is creating buzz, it is sure to get Microsoft get back on their toes.

I agree with JoshT. This preview sounds like manipulative marketting (full of lies). First, just being integrated DOES NOT MAKE A PRODUCT ANY BETTER! To tell you the truth, I, as a programmer, think that not integrated is better. So, let me ask you, are you from Microsoft, or sponsored by them? Second, “there’s no doubt it is good”?!?!?!?!?!?!?!!?! Dude keep your act clean.

The new MS search engine and google are both fairly good, but I prefer coolwebsearch, it seems to be much faster and give much better results.

nope. i am a die hard fan of Opera. Harsh critic of Internet Explorer. Use Google all the time.

I just want Google to get better. and competition from MSN would lead to that.

People are just reading the headline and without getting the point of the post, commenting me calling me biased! That is indeed very unfortunate. :)

And the most important thing is that I want a good search engine.

Whether it is from Microsoft or Google or Yahoo… does not matter. A good product is a good product no matter which company makes it.

I understand you point. I’m sorry I thought you were part of Microsoft. Well, to tell you the truth I’m very biased against Microsoft, so I tend to exaggerate my points, so sorry. When it comes to competition, I agree with you. In the end, it’s better for the consumers.

the fact is simple and follows by common sense. “WE WANT BETTER SEARCH ENGINE”, so does not matter if it is microsoft or google, only the best will survive competition

I may be biased here… but does anyone in the entire world think Microsoft did a good thing by flooding the market with a then inferior (but bundled) browser? Why would we assume their search engine would be any different? Competition is critical for driving development. Microsoft has continually demonstrated that they will only push development to crush rivals – not because they wish to ensure we have the best products possible. If long term they squeese Google from the market who do we really think the winners will be? Certainly not the user.

    Hi,
I can’t believe that you people still shouting at anything what Microsoft deoes, you bark at them if they don’t do it, If you bark at them if they try to do it, nowadays it is fashionable to beatup Microsoft ( jelous) .., if it is a good product, and do the job what you want, accept , whether it is google or Microsoft.

I have tried the new search engine form MSM in many different ways. Once, after the recent boxing fights in the Madison Square Garden to find out who won by entering the boxers names and guess what: MSN gave me bunch of unrelated results and when I tried Google it got me right into it in first two results. I am staying with Google, Microsoft as usually screams laud but doesnt give any milk.

And one more thing (although there are many in Google favor) in Googles Translate Tool I can enter any foreign web site address and it translates everything into English. Also, when I click any link on that translated page it brings the new one which is translated as well and so on. Therefore I can read news form Italy, Spain, Portugal, Germany and France even I dont know those languages.

Google has become complacent, their index is stale and they are arrogant about dropping pages for no reason.

Yahoo are a bunch of idiots with a useless search database that makes Google’s look fresh, they charge $299.00 for the chance to be reviewed but with NO guarantee of being listed – as a result their results are incomplete.

DMOZ was a great idea but they’ve become arrogant and are also waaaaay behind so another useless search database.

Microsoft certainly would not be my first choice to give these behemoths competition, but somebody’s got to do it. My initial test searches for many new sites that are missing in the three engines mentioned showed a lot of promise, most of them listed and in a logical sequence relative to other already listed and established sites.
