NASA upgrades the software on its Mars rovers

US space agency NASA has upgraded the software on its Mars rovers. This would enable the rover to provide more functionality in the coming months.

NASA said that this updated software module was broadcast from Earth over the New Year and it was relayed through the Deep Space Network satellite system.

It has now been installed on the Spirit and Opportunity rovers. This software upgrades offer four new functions like better pattern recognition and improved self-navigation.

Dr John Callas, project manager for the Mars Exploration Rovers had more details: “These rovers are a great resource for testing software that could be useful to future Mars missions without sacrificing our own continuing mission of exploration. This new software will be a baseline for the development of flight software for the Mars Science Laboratory, but is also helpful in operating Spirit and Opportunity. ”
