Dutch police bans Segways from all public roads

In a surprising move, the Dutch police have banned the Segway vehicle from all public roads. This decision is applicable starting this New Year.

This has surprised the company as Segway Nederland director Piet Kruijt said that they were “completely ambushed” by the decision.

He further said: “We’re working on all fronts to get this resolved.” The company has sold hundreds of units of Segways in the county.

However, till any further notification is released by the police, these machines are legal only on private properties.

The police department said that the Segways are still not approved by the Traffic Agency and these cannot be issued license plates. Hans van Geenhuizen, a spokesman from the Traffic Agency clarified: “It’s a nice vehicle, I’ve ridden one myself. It doesn’t have a brake, you brake by leaning back, and that’s clearly not permissible.”
