General Motors India gains with the popularity of Chevy on Indian roads
US based automaker General Motors never had it easy with their Opel branded cars. However, ever since they launched the Chevy branded cars in India (which actually were mostly South Korean cars), they are doing rather well.
The company has posted a sales gain of 19.4 per cent for the month of December 2006. GM India sold 2,583 units last month.
GM sold 1,517 units of Chevrolet Tavera, 759 units of Chevrolet Aveo and 307 units of Chevrolet Optra in India in December 2006.
This year should be exciting for the company considering they have just launched their first small car for the Indian market, Chevrolet U-VA. The car competes with Suzuki Swift and Hyundai Getz and has been priced competitively.
GM India Vice-President P Balendran said in a statement: “2006 has been a very memorable year, which marked the greatest product offensive in the company’s history as the Chevrolet Indian Revolution picked up momentum. This resulted in Chevrolet emerging as one of fastest-growing vehicle brands in India.”
