Rwanda joins the One Laptop Per Child initiative
Rwanda has now become the eighth developing country to join the One Laptop Per Child initiative. This program is aimed at providing cheap computing devices to students to promote education and learning.
OLPC said in a statement that they would provide Rwanda with initial test laptops and technical support at no cost.
And the group would start supplying provide Rwanda with initial test laptops and technical support at no cost to the country within this year itself.
The cost of these laptops would be handled by the government. Some other countries to have joined this program include Argentina, Brazil, Libya, Nigeria, Pakistan, Thailand and Uruguay. India has however declined to become a part of the program saying that the initiative is of little use in India.
The XO computer as it is called features several improvised design elements to keep their pricing low. It comes powered with the free Linux operating system and flash memory.
