Blockbuster closes operations in Peru due to blatant piracy in the region
US based movie rental company Blockbuster has completely closed their operations in Peru. Experts believe that the reason behind this move is the blatant piracy prevailing in the region.
Blockbuster is apparently finding it hard to gain customers in the country considering it is cheaper to buy a pirated DVD, than it is to legally rent one.
Company spokesperson Randy Hargrove had this to say: “I can confirm the last shop shut down a few days ago… For now there are no plans to reenter the Peruvian market.”
Sources say that people can purchase illegal copies of Hollywood flicks in the country for as little as $1 from street vendors. Renting a legal DVD costs twice that much.
