December last week saw record music downloads
Nielsen SoundScan has reported that the digital download market saw record sales in the last week of December 2006.
They suggest that new people getting their brand new digital music players landed on digital music stores and checked out the stuff on offer.
The US digital download market saw sales of as many as 30.1 million tracks. The entire year saw sales of more than 581 million units.
This is an improvement of 65% compared to sales in the previous year. The last week of 2005 saw sales of 19.9 million digital tracks.
Neilson reported that Fergie’s “Fergalicious” was the most popular song in this period seeing sales of as many as 294,000 units.
Market analysts further predicted that Apple Computer sold a record 16 million iPods in the last quarter of last year.
