NTT DoCoMo planning to upgrade data speed for their subscribers

Japan’s largest mobile phone carrier NTT DoCoMo has said that they would upgrade its wireless network to bring faster data transfer speeds to their subscribers.

This would enhance the existing speeds by over hundreds of times and the mobile users would be able to see high-quality video.

They plan to start testing this new technology later this year and could implement this system by 2010. Market sources say that this project could cost the company around $1.7 billion in investments.

The company would be building this network on the Super 3G platform which is based on the globally dominant GSM wireless standard. This would be different from the other 3G technology UMTS used by most GSM carriers.

DoCoMo claims that the speeds on this network would be roughly around 100 megabits per second. Their existing network support speeds of around 384 kilobits per second.

This network would handle the transition period for the company to the fourth-generation systems.
