Qualcomm and Broadcom showcase next generation mobile processors

The mobile internet technology is improving at an impressive pace. However, the devices using these technologies need more powerful and capable processors.

Qualcomm and Broadcom are showcasing their new technology products at the Consumer Electronics Show.

Qualcomm showed their latest family of chipsets called Snapdragon. These have been designed to add expanded functionality to future generations of consumer electronics. This range is targeted at gaming and portable entertainment devices, pocket computers, and smartphones.

This chipset is powered with a Qualcomm’s Scorpion 1-GHz microprocessor. It is paired with a 128-bit multiple-data capability and Qualcomm’s 600-MHz digital signal processor to handle multimedia applications.

Qualcomm claimed that this chip solution would support new mobile technologies including the EV-DO, deployed by Sprint and Verizon Wireless, UMTS/HSDPA, deployed by Cingular. It would also support Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Broadcom also showcased their single-chip HSDPA processor, which is capable of connecting mobile users to the Web at 7 Mbps.
