Universal Music launches an online store for classical and jazz music
World’s biggest music company Universal Music has launched what they call the largest online site for classical and jazz music.
This would be their entry into the growing trend of gaining from the digital music download industry which is dominated by Apple Inc and their iTunes store.
Mark Wilkinson, a marketing director for Universal’s classics and jazz division spoke on this new launch: “We expect sales to begin with to be relatively modest, but by the third or fourth quarter of the year to be making a positive contribution to the business.”
He further said: “I think (market for digital downloads) can only grow, and as the Apple iPod generation grows, they start to discover the classics.”
The site launch took place with a live performance by Scottish violinist Nicola Benedetti.
Universal is making available more than 100,000 classical and jazz tracks and nearly 8,000 CDs on this web store. They aim to add 1,500 new tracks every month. Downloads would cost 79 pence each.
