Texas Instruments working on chips for low cost mobile phones

Texas Instruments has said that they are actively working on chips for low cost mobile handsets. These chips are targeted at mobile phones which are sold in developing markets.

They suggest that the mobile phones powered with these chips could be sold for as little as USD 20. GPRS enabled phones could be as cheap as USD 35.

TI’s role in this process is essential as they are the world’s largest maker of the chips which are used in mobile phones and the chips are essentially the most expensive part in the handset.

Avner Goren, director of marketing for cellular systems at Texas Instruments said in a statement: “When people in developing countries want to upgrade their mobile phones, they’re willing to pay for a more expensive phone with more features. They want more.”

These handsets are very popular in emerging markets like India and China which are increasingly becoming important markets for mobile phone makers around the world including the leaders Nokia and Motorola.
