MySpace.com hit with an online predator related lawsuit
Four families are suing both News Corp and their online social networking service MySpace.com with a lawsuit claiming that the service resulted in their underage daughters getting sexually abused by adults they met on the site.
They are being represented by law firms, Barry & Loewy LLP of Austin, Texas, and Arnold & Itkin LLP of Houston. The families have filed separate lawsuits in Los Angeles Superior Court. The lawsuit alleges negligence, recklessness, fraud and negligent misrepresentation by the companies in dealing with online security of their users.
Jason A. Itkin, an Arnold & Itkin lawyer spoke about this lawsuit: “In our view, MySpace waited entirely too long to attempt to institute meaningful security measures that effectively increase the safety of their underage users. Hopefully these lawsuits can spur MySpace into action and prevent this from happening to another child somewhere.”
The families are seeking monetary damages in the millions of dollars as per the law firms representing the families. Hemanshu Nigam, MySpace’s chief security officer had just recently spoken about the measures taken by the company: “MySpace serves as an industry leader on Internet safety and we take proactive measures to protect our members. We provide users with a range of tools to enable a safer online experience.”

About

Come on now, isn’t it the parents’ responsibility to ensure their children’s safety? If the parents provided better education about online safety/security to their children and spent more time monitoring their children’s activities, then perhaps these types of situations can be avoided. People should consider if this is a case of bad parenting, and not so easily point fingers at the big corporations in hopes to sue them and make a hefty sum of money. But then again, we do live in the day and age where everyone will try to sue anybody for anything under the sun! People hardly take responsibility for their own actions, or lack thereof.
Response to M:
No you come on now, dont forget the mother who was 9 mos pregnant 2 years ago and was murdered by a maniac using these chat clients claiming she wanted to purchase a puppy from the pregnant woman who ran a puppy breeding business. The maniac woman posed as an interested animal lover only to stalk the woman, and cut her baby out after she killed her. This did happen in Kansas.
So No parents arent responsible for someone elses intentions to harm another, if they were so psychic perhaps they would of known but the point to this whole matter is, there are maniacs out there pretending to be ANY ONE or ANYTHING to lure a victim in. Use your brain thats what God gave it too you for. Or was common sense not passed out while conception was in the process!!!
God get a reality check!
The girl was asulted! perhaps it should happen to you so you can cry and see if you get anywhere, it might teach you to wake up and smell the damn coffee!
